Army cadets from Inverness are trophy winners

ARMY cadets from Inverness have helped a Highland team to victory in a Scotland-wide contest.

The team also brought silverware home with them following the annual Scottish Cadet Military Skills Competition at Barry Buddon Training area near Dundee.

Cadet Colour Sergeant Mathew MacLean (17), Cadet Sergeant Connor Hutchison (16), Cadet Corporal Samuel Stubbs (15), from 1st Battalion The Highlanders’ were among those who took part.

During the two-day competition the Inverness Company cadets made up part of the ten strong Highlander team who competed against 13 cadet teams from Army Cadet and Combined Cadet Force units across Scotland.

The teams were put through their paces in a series of challenges which ranged from obstacle courses and first aid scenarios to patrol skills and shooting.

At the end of the competition the Battalion team was third overall – however, the team was named the Top Army Cadet Team for being the highest placed ACF team of the competition.

The Highlanders were also named the inaugural winners of the competition’s new Fallen Plates shooting competition.

Selection for the team required the cadets to attend two training weekends at Fort George in th run-up to the contest.

A cadet spokesman said: “The 1st Battalion the Highlanders Army Cadet Force is a youth organisation which provides challenging adventure, sporting and community activities aiming to inspire young people to achieve success in live while having fun at the same time.”
