Highland Youth Parliament (HYP) will holding its annual conference at Inverness College UHI on Monday and Tuesday.

The HYP conference is a young person-led event which is expected to attract 80 young people from across the Highlands as well as Highland Council officials, councillors, representatives of High Life Highland and partner agencies, in order to influence decision making that impacts the region’s young people.

The event will be themed around young people’s right to freedom of expression with sessions including peer support for young people’s mental health, climate change, education and teenage pregnancy.

A draft of the new Highland youth work strategy will be presented for comment, prior to its consideration by the council in August.

Highland youth convener Esme Leitch said: “The Highland Youth Parliament Conference is a huge asset to youth participation in Highland and an event that is looked forward to by young people from across the authority.

“This year, there is a really diverse range of sessions for the young people to take part in, and also some chances for them to relax, meet new people and make new friends. I’m really excited to hear some of the conversations that come from the sessions covering the big topics like climate change and mental health, taking those comments further in my role as youth convener if I can.”
