A MILESTONE anniversary was reached when the centenary opening of the Nairn Angling Association took place on Saturday at the Jubilee Bridge.

The special event celebrated 100 years of the association’s fishing on the River Nairn.

The ceremony was supposed to be opened by committee member Kevan Mackay as his family had been involved every season since 1923 with the association, but unfortunately he took ill with Covid.

The ceremony was instead performed by vice-president James Dunbar as the president Willie Baron had been in hospital and was also unable to attend.

“A good turn out of anglers and friends took place, with piper Dennis playing us to the river and the usual dram was thrown in the river with good wishes for the new season,” said a spokesman.

“To mark the centenary, we are having a free three-course dinner in the

Nairn Dunbar Golf Club later in the year with a complementary drink and members will be contacted nearer the time with details.

“We also are having a centenary booklet published with pictures and anecdotes from 1923 to date, which will be available soon,” they added.
