An Inverness councillor says she is 'flabbergasted' at war memorial grounds being used as a campsite.

With Highland-wide reports of inconsiderate behaviour by higher than usual numbers of self-catering tourists visiting the area as a result of coronavirus putting the brakes on foreign holidays another example of thoughtlessness was captured in the heart of Inverness.

Two tents were pitched at Cavell Gardens War Memorial by the River Ness over the weekend.

Eye-witnesses who spoke to the Inverness Courier said they were occupied by four people.

Inverness Central councillor Bet McAllister said: "I am absolutely flabbergasted that anyone would think it was OK to pitch a tent in Cavell Gardens.

"I will be checking with Highland Council to make sure no mess has been left.

"This is one of the most beautiful parks, and a lovely place to walk around.

"It will be a great shame if we need to put up a sign to say 'no camping' when it is ridiculous that anyone thinks it is appropriate in the first place."

A man who saw the campers, but did not want to be named, said: "I could not believe my eyes that these campers had taken to setting up a tent at a war memorial.

"I personally know a number of people who have scattered ashes in the park, and I know that it is certainly used as a place of quiet contemplation in the city.

"There should be no camping at the war memorial, that is for certain."
