WATCH: Inverness couple reveal secret to a happy marriage

A couple from Inverness reveal their secret to a happy marriage as they celebrate 60 years of being married.

Heather and Alex Grant first met one another in their early twenties at the telephone exchange in Inverness. Alex worked for the post office engineering department and Heather was a telephone operator, but once their worlds collided, it was love at first sight.

The pair were engaged for a year and then married the following year.

The couple commemorated their vows in front of friends and family at the Crown Church and continued celebrating the occasion at the Cummings Hotel in Inverness, which is now well known as the city's Wetherspoons.

The couple joked by saying that 'tolerance' was the secret to a happy marriage, but Alex soon revealed that 'looking after each other' is the true answer to nurturing a long term happy relationship.

Alex said: "We really do feel very happy and lucky as a lot of our contemporaries haven't lived this long, or they may have experienced the loss of a partner, so I would say we are extremely fortunate."

Heather and Alex have been apart of the Inverness community since they were children and lived in the same house for the entirety of their marriage. They have watched the city continuously change as it has flourished and evolved into what it is today, but one thing that has stayed the same is the couples love for one another.

Heather said: "We have lived in the same house for nearly 60 years, which is a long time!

"And throughout that time, we have had some lovely neighbours that became family to us."

She continued: "We have seen a lot in this house, from watching the children go to school to meeting our grandson; there have been some really happy times."

They said: "We have a small but happy family to celebrate this lovely occasion with."
