The Alba Party is set to gather in Inverness on Saturday for its spring conference at the Eden Court Theatre as the pro-independence party claims it has been bolstered by “an influx of new members.”

Led by former First Minister Alex Salmond the new members including some prominent names including author and broadcaster Cameron McNeish who recently left the SNP.

He said “I have worked on a number of issues with Alex Salmond over the years and he never disappointed me. I still believe he is the man to lead Scotland to Independence.”

Independence will be at the top of the conference agenda but party members will also discuss Highland-related issues such as recognising the Gaidhealtachd regions of Scotland, opposition to the controversial HPMA legislation being put forward by the Scottish Government, as well as connectivity in the north including roads.

Alba Highlands convenor James Duncan said “It’s great to see the party taking our concerns here in the Highlands and Islands seriously. Many here often feel forgotten by centralisations, so I am delighted that so many important Highland & Island issues will be debated such as the motions that will be going forward on Connectivity and the state of our roads”.

Alba Highlands organiser Hector Macleod added “If ever there was a time for political parties to be standing up for the Highlands and Islands it is now.

“I brought a housing motion to our last spring conference in Glasgow and urged members to help stop a second Highland Clearances. It saddens and angers me that the risk of rural clearance has not declined – it has escalated with the devastating HMPA legislation being proposed.

“Given our current situation and stance I will be speaking and asking our members to reject these devastating proposals and ensure the Alba Party play its part in standing up for our Highlands and Islands”

After a full day of discussions and debates the local Alba Highlands group will be hosting a “Highland Hoolie” at the Beaufort Hotel, where they will be joined by renowned Independence supporting blogger, Barrhead Boy, for a “live audience with” event of “Through a Scottish Prism”.

We will have speakers, entertainment, followed by Stovies and finishing off with Live music from well known local band Schiehillion.

Tickets for the “Highland Hoolie” can be bought on an eventbrite page by searching for “Alba Highland Hoolie”

Well known activist, Alba Highlands secretary and organiser of many and including this event, Judith Reid, said “After a full day at conference, what more could members and supporters want than Good Food, Good Music and Good Craic?”.

“The capital of the Highlands is known for our world famous Hospitality, and this event will demonstrate that to its finest. We hope to see as many members and even non-members join us for a great Highland Hoolie”
