HUNDREDS of flyers, posters and business cards destined for letterboxes in Inverness have been seized in an ongoing crackdown on doorstep crime.

Trading standards officers led by Gordon Robb removed the promotional material from circulation pending further enquiries into their legitimacy.

The move came during a two-day operation in Inverness and Grantown involving the police, trading standards officers, the Department of Work and Pensions and others.

Officers from the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) were also involved, testing commercial vans and lorries at its site in Seafield Road.

Police sergeant Richard Ross said: "During the operation a number of offences were detected which included road traffic offences and trading practices offences and as such, a number of people will be reported to the procurator fiscal in due course."

More than 100 vehicles were tested over the two days. One was found to be over the legal weight limit and immediately banned from the road along with seven others with mechanical defects.

"Business owners that they have a responsibility to make sure that vehicles are not only legal for road usage but are also mechanically fit for purpose," Sergeant Ross added.

"We will continue to carry out similar operations throughout the year to detect and deter those involved in targeting the vulnerable public with their bogus-type workmen practices."
