Highland MP Jamie Stone among MPs calling for action after figures show A82 and A9 Scotland's 'deadliest' roads

TWO of the Highlands' most important roads have been branded the "deadliest" in Scotland.

Lib Dem MPs, including the Highlands' Jamie Stone, have demanded that action be taken to improve safety on the A82 and the A9 after they published figures on the number of fatal or serious collisions on various trunk roads.

The A82 - which runs up to Inverness from Glasgow via Loch Lomond, Glen Coe and Fort William - topped the list for the country's "worst" with 73 fatal or serious crashes in the past two years.

The A9, which extends from Thurso to Falkirk, was a close second with 69 collisions.

Mr Stone, who represents Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, said: "As the figures show, too many are still falling victim to death or serious injury on our roads".

He added that the Scottish Government needed to "finally deliver" on improvements on the roads, and stressed that, as the tourist industry reopens from lockdown, traffic levels on the routes have been increasing.
