Details are still awaited about any casualties from this afternoon's three-vehicle accident on the A9 at Raliabeg just south of Newtonmore.

At one point there were tailbacks of up to 10 miles both north and south of the crash site as emergency services attended the scene after their 12.45pm call out.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Those involved had been removed from their vehicles before our officers arrived at the scene. We have no details of any casualties and must refer you to Police Scotland."

There has still been no confirmation of any casualties although one ambulance was seen to be among the traffic heading north shortly after the incident.

"So a major accident at Ralia today has seen the road closed for nearly six hours," commented A9 Dual Action Group campaigner Laura Hansler.

"We sincerely hope that all involved are OK.

"A further accident at Kingussie junction onto the A9 further compounding this, again our thoughts with all involved.

"Also reports of serious accidents on the A82 and A96 virtually shutting down the Highlands.

"How many times do we have to scream that our infrastructure can no longer cope with the severe influx of traffic, all of our services, including all our emergency services are stretched beyond their max?"

Details are awaited from the emergency services but Traffic Scotland's diversion notice has now been withdrawn from the official website.
