ROADWORKS on a section of the A9 trunk route through the Highlands are set to get under way next week with motorists warned of temporary delays.

Essential surfacing improvements on the A9 to the north of Portgower in Sutherland are set to get under way on Tuesday (July 19).

The project will see 360 metres of road resurfaced, creating a smoother and safer road for motorists.

The improvements are scheduled to take place over three nights, with works scheduled to take place between 7pm and 7am each night.

UPDATE: A9 junction closure planned for Evanton roadworks

All works are anticipated to be complete by 7am Friday (July 22), subject to weather conditions.

To protect road workers and motorists, lane closures with temporary traffic lights and a 10mph convoy will be in place during working hours.

Traffic management will be removed outwith working hours; however, a 30mph speed restriction will remain in place as traffic will be running over a temporary surface.

Access through the works site for emergency services will be maintained at all times.

Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s north west representative said: “This surfacing project on the A9 to the north of Portgower will help address defects and greatly improve the surface for motorists.

“The traffic management proposed is essential to keep roadworkers and motorists safe during the works. We have taken steps to minimise disruption by carrying out the works overnight and by removing traffic management outwith working hours.

“Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as they can, and we thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance while we complete these projects. We encourage motorists to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up-to-date travel information.”
