Following long delays this afternoon following a two-car crash at the notorious Ralia junction just south of Newtonmore, traffic is moving again in both south and north directions.

The air ambulance finally took off over Newtonmore at around 3.45pm.

A police investigation is under way after the serious RTA which happened just after lunchtime.

Emergency services were called to the crash scene at 2pm.

Thousands attending the Newtonmore Highland Gathering just a mile or so away on The Eilan watched as the air ambulance passed overhead on its way.

As the games progressed, traffic crawled towards the A9 from the Kingussie side and then, minutes later, mostly crawled back the way having been diverted by those controlling the scene.

"But there's nobody up at the Kingussie end telling them not to come down here. I see no police officers. It's pretty chaotic," said one of the stewards on duty at the entrance to the games field.

The chaos continued for much of the afternoon.

A Police spokesperson said: "Northbound closures were in place."
