POLICE have reminded Highland cyclists of their "responsibility" to ensure they are well visible in the dark or low light conditions.

The plea was made following a number of incidents, particularly on the A82 in Fort William, where motorists had reported not being able to see cyclists properly.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Operation Close Pass places a legal obligation on vehicle drivers to give at least 1.5 metres of space when passing a cyclist, cyclists have an onus therefore in regards to their own safety to be seen to allow drivers to be able to pass them safely.

"We would like to remind cyclists of their responsibility – as per guidance in the Highway Code - during the hours of darkness to wear some form of bright / florescent clothing and have functioning lights fitted to the front and rear of their bicycles. The Highway Code - Rules for cyclists (59 to 82) - Guidance - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)"
