A WICK man who had been abstinent from alcohol for some time “got a taste for it” again when he met his nephew in the Highland capital.

But when 55-year-old George MacPhee, of Murray Street, took too much in MacCallum’s bar in Inverness’s Union Street, door staff put him out.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that MacPhee was unhappy at the ejection, shouted and swore outside, threatened to smash the bar’s windows and swung a metal road sign on August 20, 2021.

Fiscal depute Sharon Ralph said MacPhee did not strike anyone with it and police were called.

“He was placed in the back of the police van, but from there he tried to get out and get to door staff while making threats,” Mrs Ralph continued.

Defence solicitor Rory Gowans said his client “had stopped drinking but got a taste for it again when out with his nephew”.

“As a consequence of how much he had to drink, he has no recollection of events,” he added.

“He now realises why he stopped drinking as he has been out of trouble for six or seven years.

“He had a night in the cells and has nothing outstanding.”

MacPhee admitted threatening behaviour and was fined £210.

Sheriff Paul Reid told him: “You have learned the hard way why you abstained from alcohol.”
