MAJOR night-time roadworks will spark various road closures around the Raigmore Interchange in Inverness from tomorrow, Bear Scotland has warned.

The road maintenance firm will be resurfacing 600 metres of the A9/A96 at the Raigmore Interchange, as well as replacing and extending safety barriers for 10 nights starting on Monday.

The work will result in the closure or partial closure of some A9 slip roads, sections of the interchange and parts of the A96 and Millburn Road on their approaches to it on certain nights, with diversions in place. These diversions will be signposted.

Ian Stewart, Bear Scotland’s north-west representative, said: “This is an ambitious project, seeing a substantial investment to improve both the road surface and safety barriers at the Raigmore Interchange. We are pleased to be able to make such extensive enhancements, which will help keep those using the A9 safe as well as creating a much smoother and more resilient road surface.

“We’ve taken steps to limit the overall impact of the project by carrying out the improvements at night, to cause the least disruption. Our team will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as they can, and we thank the local community and A9 road users for their patience in advance. We encourage motorists to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up-to-date travel information.”

The work will initially run from 7pm at night until 7am in the morning while safety barrier upgrades are carried out to the southbound carriageway of the A9 and the slip road onto the A96.

It will then run from 8pm to 6am on June 5, 6 and 7 while resurfacing work is carried out on various sections. The first of these will be at the interchange across the A96 approach and the southbound A9 slip. The second night with affect the A9 northbound off-slip approach, before the third night sees resurfacing across the Millburn Road entry and exit.

The work will then return to 7pm to 7am each night until June 9 inclusive for further crash barrier upgrades.

During the safety barrier upgrades, the southbound A9 carriageway will be reduced to one lane, with lowered 50mph and 30mph limits in place.

On the first evening of the resurfacing work the A96 will be closed westbound between the Raigmore Interchange and Inverness Retail Park roundabout. The Raigmore Interchange will also be closed between the A96 approach and the A9 southbound on-slip. Access to the Inverness Retail Park will be maintained at all times, while access will also be maintained to the Stoneyfield Estate for the Travelodge, Snow Goose bar, and the Holiday Inn.

The second and third evening of resurfacing will see the Raigmore Interchange closed between the A9 northbound off-slip and the A9 northbound on-slip. Millburn Road will be closed between the Millburn Road roundabout and Raigmore Interchange.

Access will be maintained for the businesses along Millburn Road including DFS, Juvenate Health & Leisure, Leonardo Hotel, Millburn Takeaway, KFC and Kwikfit. Access will also be maintained for residents of the Raigmore Estate with access via the King Duncan’s Road junction. A four-way traffic light system will be installed on the approaches of Millburn Road roundabout. These will stay on green except for when traffic is being escorted from Leonardo Hotel, Juvenate Health & Leisure and DFS. At these times, all lights will be put on red so traffic can be safely escorted west down the wrong way of Millburn Road to Millburn Road roundabout.

All works are scheduled to end by 7am on June 9. There will be no roadworks on the weekend nights of Saturday and Sunday, June 3 and 4.
