Seven Highland railway stations are among the 20 least used in the whole of the UK, new figures have revealed.

The Office of Rail and Road has released figures for all stations over the period between April 1 last year and March 31, 2023.

And stations on the Far North and Kyle lines are among those to feature in the list of 20 least used sites.

Scotscalder in Caithness is the quietest of the Highland stations, recording just 124 people alighting or embarking trains over that period – making it the seventh least used in the UK.

Next was Sutherland's Kildonan station (10th least used, 148 passengers).

Lochluichart (12th, 182 passengers), Invershin (15th, 232 passengers), Altnabreac (17th, 280 passengers), Achanalt (18th, 282 passengers) and Culrain (20th, 304 passengers) were also among the 20 quietest on the entire rail network.

There are almost 2600 stations on the network.

The quietest in the UK was Teesside Airport, with just two passengers.

The figures were recorded only up to April 1 this year, so the temporary closure of Altnabreac did not factor into its position on the list.
