OK, so maybe – just maybe – spring is on its way up the garden path, if not quite hammering on the door yet.
But February is still most definitely the time of year to enjoy a hearty bite, and if the new year diet is starting to get a tad wearisome then all the more reason to indulge. Right?
And what is more indulgent than an unctuous, oozing, delicious steak pie? The tender meat, the flavour-packed gravy, that crisp pastry crunch?
If you're already salivating, here are just a few places you might want to check out this weekend – or as soon as you can.
Number 27
Castle Street, Inverness
The traditional style bar and restaurant in the heart of the city is a great place to relax and enjoy some no nonsense great food.
Friendly, efficient staff make every visit pleasure – you will be served efficiently but without any sense of being rushed.
Just be aware the portions are generous – so don't plan on anything too strenuous in the aftermath!
Culloden Moor Inn
Culloden Moor, Inverness
Spacious and airy it's another no nonsense locale in which it's easy to relax – plus it's nice to get out of the town isn't it?
And there is both the battlefield and Culloden Wood close at hand for a bracing walk afterwards to shift at least some of the calories.
You will need it!
Urquhart's Restaurant
Young Street, Inverness
The small family run restaurant overseen by owner/chef Brian Urquhart and daughter Rachel opened in February 2011 and prides itself in fresh home cooked food.
Small and bijou, booking is definitely recommended for a table in the upstairs space.
The Glasshouse Restaurant
Simpsons Garden Centre
Culloden Road, Inverness
OK, steak pie will not always be on the menu at this ever popular eatery – award-winning no less – with its regularly changing menu, but it's definitely worth popping in on the off chance. You're bound to get lucky one time and – while this feature is meant to extol the virtues solely of steak in pastry – it's not as though there won't be something else to tempt your tastebuds if you're not!
Plus you get to enjoy browsing among all things gardening either before or after lunch.
John M Munro
Queensgate, Inverness
Sometimes, for all that it's nice to get out of the house, there is nothing you want more than to kick back and relax behind your own front door.
But why should that mean you have to miss out?
There are plenty of options for enjoying top-notch grub in the comfort of your own home, not least when it comes to the iconic steak pie – and the offering at Munro's is certainly not least.
Taking over from long-established butcher Duncan Fraser and Son in 2021, the famous Queensgate site has been a cornerstone of the Highland capital's food trade for more than a century with Munro's showing no sign of skimping on quality.
