You can’t beat a good plate – or poke – of piping hot fish and chips, accompanied by salt and vinegar and maybe even an optional portion of mushy peas.

But where are the best places to indulge yourself in the north of Scotland?

Here are some suggestions:

The White Cottage

North Kessock

With its great location directly on the waterfront at North Kessock it's a great place for locals as well as those from the other side of the bridge looking to get out, but not go too far.

It's high quality café style really, food impeccably prepared by Stuart Stirling in the kitchen and Andrea taking care of things front of house. Simple, understated, totally relaxed a visit is a treat all round.

For fish and chips you can sit in for lunch or take advantage of the Friday and Saturday takeaway chippy menu.

It's currently closed on its winter beak but due to reopen on March 1. Make a date!

River House

Greig Street

Inverness

Slightly stretching the meaning of "fish and chips" but in a very good way indeed River House Restaurant is a must for lovers of all marine edibles.

Cullen skink, smoked salmon and seared scallops are just a few of the stater options with oysters and mussels available in a variety of guises and seafood pasta, cod loin and sea trout among the main course offerings.

Chef proprietor Allan "Alfie" Little is Cornish by birth and has a real affinity with the sea, uses locally sourced top quality produce for his menus.

The Friary

Beauly

At the heart of village life this chippy's fish suppers are a warming welcome for visitors to the area naturally drawn to the square.

Of course it's also popular with locals and always busy – a sure sign of quality.

Takeaways are prepared fresh to order so there can be a bit of a wait but, boy, is it worth it!

McLeod's

Grant Street

Inverness

There was a time not that long ago when you'd ask where was best in Inverness for a chippy only to be met by a host of blank stares or non-plussed shrugs. They either weren't there or weren't good enough for anybody to actually feel comfortable recommending them.

That's all changed now with good word of mouth for The Chipsy King in Westhill and others, but closest to the city centre it has to be McLeod's in Merkinch, a fairly recent arrival that isn already approaching institution staus.

Hot food full of flavour and queues out the door its Facebook page includes regular posts about exactly where its latest stock is coming from – that's the actual boat that landed it and when.

It's no wonder this McLeod's is up for best fish and chips at this year's Scotlands Busienss Awards.

Church Street

Inverness

Delicious homemade fish and chips providing excellent value for money, that's what is on offer at Comfort Foods café, run by husband and wife team Lorraine and Richard Comfort.

They were featured before Christmas as one of Inverness BID's city centre stars and it's not hard to see why.

We said then that they offered a welcoming, family-friendly eatery where the company and warmth is just as important as the food and that's still true now.
