When you don't want a full meal but just to take the weight off your feet for five minutes what better than a sweet treat?

Here are some places to check out the next time you're in the mood for a scone and jam.

The best of both worlds – a bright, clean café in which to enjoy your scone with a tea or coffee then the full extent of the inspirational city green space to explore besides. At this time of year the bulbs are starting to come up – indeed crocuses, snowdrops and miniature irises are all in full bloom. Just enjoy, or actively seek out inspiration for your own garden.

The anchor tenant of the redeveloped market food hall, they of course much more than scones. But if you're seeking respite from a busy city centre shopping trip (or looking to build up your strength before embarking on the same) it's a nice space to stop off in.

And if you are out and about further afield don't forget they also have an outlet in Muir of Ord. The space there may be snugger, but the offering is equally delicious.

Handily located just off the A9 on the road north, by Invergordon, this a great stopping off point on longer journeys.

Staff are pleasant, the premises are clean, the space inviting you to relax.

Again there is much more on the menu than scones, but the home baking on offer is certainly not to be missed.

The Storehouse

Nestling waterside a hop, skip and a jump from the Cromarty Bridge, has there ever been a time when the restaurant here hasn't been busy? Certainly never when I've popped in.

Capable staff make sure the queue keeps moving though and, no matter how packed, there always seems to be a seat available when you need it.

Enjoy the mouth-watering food hall too, and the gift shop – and if you take a walk on the shoreside grounds you might even spot a seal.

Specialising in local produce this gourmet deli is a real treat of a stop off. Everything is fresh and prepared to the highest standard. The staff are always busy but never less than friendly.

While quality like this doesn't come cheap it is possible to really treat yourself still without breaking the bank.
