5 great places in Inverness for kids on rainy summer days

With summer holidays approaching and the recent heatwave wobbling a bit, where can you take the kids when the weather's not great?

A wide range of sports activities are available for children at Inverness Leisure, including mini racket sports, badmintion and of course swimming. And there are also supervised play sessions for ages none months to five years.

For younger speed demons junior kartway sessions are available for youngsters (all of whom will be required to be accompanied by an adult).

There are three packages to choose from: Junior Grand Prix – two five-minute heats and a 10-minute final competing with friends or parents (plus pizza if you wish); Dual Kart – where youngsters aged five and over can be the passenger while being driven round the track by a marshal; and Teen 22 – described as an "ideal package for families" looking for longer track time where the party must include an under 16.

Of course this new city facility arrived amidst some controversy, as it coincided with the decision of High Life Highland to close its own climbing wall at the above Inverness Leisure.

Given that it is here now, though, what does it offer?

As with the Kart Raceway above there are a number of options for kids including one-hour supervised sessions for special occasions such as a birthday; the Wild Cats weekend morning bouldering sessions; and Mountain Goats – climbing and bouldering for over-12s.

A museum might not always be the obvious choice for youngsters to burn off their holiday energies but IMAG has a number of activities planned to capture their imaginations.

For pre-schoolers the Wild Escape Family Trail running until July 8 encourages them to search for wooden animals hidden in the display cases and identify the one non-native species.

The Bird Spotting Family Trail for all ages is another "treasure hunt" in the ground floor gallery for spotting both well-known and less familiar feathered friends.

It's always worth keeping an eye on the IMAG website for new activities over the coming days and weeks.

The Parkour-inspired, freestyle indoor trampoline park with over 60 inter-connected trampolines – and more – has long been a favourite of those with plenty energy to burn off.

Advance booking is always advised and there are some age restrictions and accompanying adult requirements for different sessions, so it's worth checking out the website in advance.

Mini Bouncers, Infinity Wars and parties sessions are all worth looking into.

And remember, on the days the holiday weather does prove friendly, there are plenty of options around and about for outdoor fun too.
