1 Get growing – pot your own plant

There's a great way to get your four to 10-year-olds into growing their own plants on Saturday, May 6 with Grow Minis for May at Howdens Garden Centre at 11am. The May session is about Blooming Lovely Spring Plants with the chance to plant up your own spring pot and explore the scents and colours of the garden. It's £2 a child or free for children accompanied by an adult holding a valid Grow Rewards membership. The session lasts 30 minutes.

2 Swoop in to help save the sparrow

Our familiar little sparrow is in danger! A special workshop to Help Save The Sparrow with the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) from Dobbies Little Seedlings on Sunday, May 7 has two different sessions at 10.15am and 11.30am. The event is suitable for children four to 10 and children must be accompanied by an adult. Youngsters will learn how to identify a sparrow, find out what it eats, what its nest is like and how it looks after its young. And you can get to make your own recycled carton bird feeder, find out how to attract sparrows to your garden and discover some bird-friendly plants you could grow. The first session is already limited space, so book early for your chosen time to come along.

3 Two chances to catch fun show with a message

A show for five to seven-year-olds Two In A Barrel starts with two friends in one barrel, perched on an island of rubbish. They love finding treasures in the waste that surrounds them and making up their own world of adventure. Every little thing can be transformed into something magical to start a fun game. But when space is tight, they face new challenges, like having to ration their food and learning to coexist. And what will they do when the rubbish threatens to cover them up? The show comes to Cromarty Stables on Tuesday, May 9 at 10am and at Eden Court on Wednesday, May 10 (11.30am show now sold out) at 4.30pm.
