Three people were trapped inside their vehicles after a car and van collided on the A96 on the outskirts of Inverness at lunchtime on Monday.

The two vehicles collided on the busy A96 trunk road in the Balloch/Allanfearn area at around 12.10pm.

The road was closed in both directions following the crash, and remained shut at the time of writing.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said three fire engines and a heavy rescue unit from Inverness were called to the scene following the collision.

They added that three people were initially trapped inside the vehicles following the crash. It was not known if they had been freed at the time of writing, or if anyone inside the vehicles was injured in the collision.

A police spokesperson added that "the road will be closed while investigations take place".

Also confirming the road closure, Traffic Scotland added: "The A96 at Balloch is currently closed in both directions due to a road traffic incident. Motorists are advised to use the diversion in operation and allow for longer than normal journey times."

A diversion is in place via Barn Church Road, Culloden.
