Inverness's newest primary school is finally open following several months of delays.

The new school, built by Kier Construction, was originally earmarked for an August 2022 opening. Then a planned October start date for classes at Ness Castle Primary was put back to the beginning of the January 2023 term before being knocked back to today.

The delays are understood to be due to multiple factors affecting the construction industry.

Prospective pupils at the new-build school had been taught in temporary and spare classroom accommodation at Holm Primary.

But this morning headteacher Craig Connon welcomed pupils, along with a piper.

"A huge thank you to the team at Holm for putting up with us for so much longer than we initially thought," he said. "And to you, the parents and carers, for sticking with us and forming the first contingent of Ness Castle families.

"Already we have a brilliant community built up before this building has even opened.

"To the first ever children of Ness Castle Primary School – you are why this building exists. Before I have used the Lego mission statement of 'inspiring the builders of tomorrow,' this building will do all that and more."

The school will be closed tomorrow and Wednesday due to strike action.
