A £1500 donation will help pupils at a Fort Augustus school develop their skills and boost the academy's plan to create a social enterprise that will fuel their business acumen.

Kilchuimen Academy and its quest for an SQA-recognised Barista Qualification programme were the grateful recipients of the donation from food wholesaler, Fife Creamery Ltd.

The donation was secured after the school was nominated by the kind staff of Cobbs Café in the village, who have been supporting the academy with this process.

Kilchuimen Academy’s aim is to support their senior pupils to all achieve the qualification by the time they leave school – which it believes will open up opportunities for the students, making them "very employable anywhere in the world"!

The long term goal of introducing this qualification is to create a social enterprise for the school with students learning to run a "café" for school events/fundraising, allowing the pupils to develop skills such as budgeting/ordering, working as team and customer service. The hope in the long run is to also promote the hospitality industry to the students – highlighting the many opportunities available to them especially within the local area.

“Thanks to the generous donation by Fife Creamery we will be able to make this dream of creating our own enterprise 'café' a reality," said Yvonne Walker, acting headteacher at Kilchuimen Academy. "We are delighted to be moving this exciting project forward. This will give our young people the skills and qualifications to help prepare them for future employment.

"Thank you to Fife Creamery for their financial support in making this project sustainable."

The donation is the latest in a series of monthly donations planned by the Fife based wholesale firm to go to good causes across Scotland. These local good causes are to be nominated by the staff and customers of all those Cafes, Convenience Stores, Butchers, Hotels and all other food businesses that deal directly with Fife Creamery.

Fraser Campbell, of Cobbs, added: “As a local business, and as a business in the hospitality industry we understand the need to reach out and support local communities and in particular our young people. Any initiative that supports developing talent in the hospitality industry deserves our support. We are indeed very thankful to Fife Creamery who has very generously donated £1500 to this project."

“We are delighted that this month’s donation will be going to such a worthwhile and relevant cause supporting young people in the town providing them with such a useful qualification,” said David Miller of Fife Creamery.
