It's that time of year again when we can finally start looking forward to some of the adventures we have planned in the outdoors – once the weather warms up!

Not only that – but it's also time for our Active Outdoors supplement, a special annual publication dedicated to all things outdoors across the Highlands and Islands and Moray.

In this issue, I've been out on the Loch Ness 360 with Graeme Ambrose, the man behind the South Loch Ness Trail, hearing his views about the circuit and a new event taking place on it in May. He's also got plenty to say about tourism in the Highlands and how we can embrace a sustainable future here.

Our Viewpoint feature is written by Helen Todd, of Ramblers Scotland, who has a few warnings about our world-leading rights of access 15 years on from the Land Reform Act coming into force, and what we must do to help protect them.

We've also got a new feature, On the right path, which will look at some of the historic routes across the north of Scotland – starting with the fantastic Loch Maree Post Road.

We've visited plenty of bothies during our time at Active Outdoors but not quite as many as Geoff Allan, the author of the Scottish Bothy Bible and his new title Scottish Bothy Walks. In fact, he's visited all of them!

I popped up to Ryvoan bothy with the man himself to talk about how these simple shelters have been a solace to him, and how the books came about.

There's also our regular events list with the big races and smaller, local events that make this area unique – so check it out if you're looking for a new challenge!

Our Active Outdoors supplement is free inside your local Highland News & Media newspaper this week.

Pick it up in the Strathy on Thursday, March 5, or the Inverness Courier, Ross-shire Journal, Northern Scot, John O'Groat Journal and Northern Times on Friday, March 6.
