Enjoy some family fun time with these indoor activities where everyone can join in. Even the older kids – if you can separate them from their phones.

Book club

Choose a favourite book (one agreed by the whole family and age-appropriate) and take turns reading aloud chapters to each other.

You have to get into character though, so make sure you do all the voices. You could even dress up!

Indoor picnic

Not everyone is lucky enough to have a garden or outdoor space, so why not recreate the outdoors, indoors and have a picnic?

Throw a blanket in the middle of the floor and surround it with your house plants.

Make sandwiches, mini cakes or traybakes, a flask of tea or a cold drink, park yourselves on the blanket and tuck in!

You could even recreate an evening under the stars. Turn the lights out, put a bundle of fairy lights and flameless flickering candles in the middle of the floor in place of a campfire and gather round to share spooky stories over hot chocolate and marshmallows.

Family quiz

This takes a little extra prep work but it’s all good fun. Form teams and come up with categories and questions to ask each of your family members – include specialist and mystery categories.

Keep it simple or introduce a knockout, quickfire round to declare a winner.

Offer up a prize or make your own family trophy.

Charades

This popular pastime can be played with teams or individually.

Choose phrases, activities, movies, songs and books, for example, write the answer on a piece of paper, fold it and put it in a container or bag.

Each family member can then draw out a piece of paper from the bag, act out the answer and see if anyone can get it.

Movie night

Create a home cinema experience with a favourite movie, turn the lights down low and tuck into lots of popcorn, crisps and other crunchy treats.

Pick a musical and enjoy a sing-along, and just let it go, let it go…
