An electrical engineer appeared sober when police pulled his vehicle over in Inverness on another matter.

But when 31-year-old Ryan Paige, of Matthews Close, Havant in Hampshire was breathalysed in Academy Street on January 14, 2023, he was positive for alcohol.

A later test showed he was almost three times the legal limit with 64mcgs of alcohol in his breath when the maximum is 22mcgs.

Defence solicitor John MacColl told Inverness Sheriff Court: "This was a mistake. He did not appreciate he was over the limit."

Paige admitted driving with excess alcohol and was fined £470 by Sheriff Sara Matheson, who also banned him from driving for a year.

However, Paige was certified as suitable for a drink-drive rehabilitation course which will earn him a three-month discount if he successfully completes it.
