Highland shinty has joined the golfing fraternity in mourning the shock death of sporting stalwart Stevie McIntosh after he took ill on a course at the weekend.

Beauly Shinty Club posted a glowing tribute to Mr McIntosh who was the head greenkeeper at the Kings Golf Club in Inverness.

The Beauly Shinty Club tribute said: "It was with a sense of disbelief for everyone when word of Stevie's sudden and untimely passing while golfing at Carrbridge emerged on Saturday.

"For such a larger than life character to be taken in his prime was hard to comprehend.

"Stevie's achievements in the field of golf are legendary being a multiple club champion at Muir of Ord, North District player and winner of titles all over Scotland as one of the finest amateur golfers of his generation.

"These feats will be better documented elsewhere as his passing will be felt keenly in golfing circles and beyond.

"We at Beauly would like to recognise all that Stevie did for the club over the years as a player when a juvenile, loyal supporter who barely missed any home games and in a professional capacity with his knowledge as head greenkeeper at the King's Course.

"Our field at Braeview is testament for all the help that Stevie gave to the club over the years by advising the best way of improving the park and coming to assist Ellie and others in implementing his ideas.

"The much admired playing surface at the recent Macauley Cup semi-final at our home was prepared by Stevie giving up his time for the good of the club.

"His presence will be missed at Braeview and throughout shinty."

The tribute ended: "We would like to express our sympathy from all at the club at this difficult time to Linda, mother Mary, brother Davie, sister Sharon, brother in law Derek and all the extended family as they come to terms with their loss.

People have been paying tribute after the death of an well-known Inverness golfing figure.

As the Courier reported over the weekend Mr McIntosh fell ill during the Stewart Taylor Gentlemen's Open at Carrbridge Golf Club on Saturday, and sadly passed away. The event was abandoned after his collapse.

The Kings Golf Club gave a further public tribute to their highly regarded employee.

The club said: "The Management Committee, staff and members of the Kings Golf Club are devastated by the sudden passing of Stevie McIntosh, our head greenkeeper.

"Stevie was an integral part of the team at the club and will be deeply missed.

"Highly regarded in the greenkeeping community, Stevie was also a fabulous amateur golfer, who won several prestigious events in his time. He was a great friend to those who knew him both inside and outside of the golfing world.

"Our condolences are with all of Stevie’s family and close friends.”
