Scotrail has taken the unusual step of telling passengers that it would be better for everyone not to take their 10:51 Inverness to Edinburgh service.

The nationalised train service took to Twitter to instead offer discounted tickets for those willing to travel on either the 08:45 or 09:42 trains.

The post states that more pre-booked Advance Single tickets for the 08:45 and 09:42 are being added which could save passengers up to 60 per cent.

A video uploaded with the post carries the following message to would-be passengers: “Trains from Inverness to Edinburgh travel through some of Scotland’s most majestic scenery such as the Drumochter Pass in the Highlands between Blair Atholl and Dalwhinnie.

“These trains are often very busy with tourists and travel groups. The 10:51 from Inverness to Edinburgh Waverley, which runs from Monday to Saturday is a particular challenge.

“There have been times recently when the number of passengers who have booked a place onboard plus those who just turn up is greater than the places available and unfortunately some customers have not been able to travel on the service.

“We’ve looked at increasing the number of carriages on the 10:51, but all our available fleet are currently being utilised. So we have made more of our lower priced tickets available on alternative services.”
