Police confirm death of Spey paddleboarder who reportedly go into trouble

Police have confirmed that a paddleboarder died this afternoon on the River Spey near Aviemore.

All emergency services were called out late this morning, including the Coastguard’s search and rescue helicopter, after the alarm went up on the Kinrara Estate.

Fire crews were despatched from Aviemore and Grantown stations to assist, and at one point both Inverness and Elgin brigades were notified but they were turned back.

The fire service was recalled at 1.30pm but other emergency services remained at the locus.

A Police Scotland spokesperson has now told the Strathy: "Around 11.45am on Friday, 31 May, 2024, we were called to a report of concern for a woman on a paddleboard in the River Spey, near to Aviemore.

"Emergency services attended however she died at the scene.

"There are not believed to any suspicious circumstances and enquiries are ongoing."
