New speed limit agreed for Nairnshire road
A new speed limit aiming to make a stretch of the A939 south of Nairn safer has been given the green light.
The change, proposed in light of a new quarry site being developed at Remore, 10km south-east of Nairn, will see the speed limit on the road between the A96 junction and the B9091 junction at Househill, as well as the C1175 between the A939 and the B9101 junctions, reduced to 40mph from the existing national speed limit.
This is due to an expected 44 per cent increase in HGV traffic on the road, associated with the quarry development.

Members of Highland Council’s Nairnshire committee agreed to the move yesterday and also asked that further measures to improve safety on the road be looked into.
Councillor Barbara Jarvie said: “It’s great that they are offering more in the Househill area, but it means that more pedestrians will want to walk that stretch of the road, and it’s not the safest.”
She asked if lighting could be improved to allow for better visibility in winter.
“That’s an active travel route, and an active schools route,” she said. “And the lack of pavement for part of the road, as well as parked vehicles when there is a funeral, it is an issue if you’ll have heavy goods vehicles going down that road.”
Consideration is also to be given to reducing the speed limit between the A96 and the Granny Barbour road junction from 30mph to 20mph.
Earlier this year, concerns were raised about the safety of this road, particularly for pedestrians walking between Househill and the A96.
