Inverness hotel scene prompts mixed reactions
As a city centre guest house proposed to add another 10 rooms to ‘remain competitive’, we asked locals about their thoughts on Inverness’s hotel scene.
Many commenters expressed their dismay, citing businesses being replaced with hotels as a negative for locals.
Commenter Pat Dennis said: “Stop killing off the cultural scene in the city for more overpriced hotels. While they’re at it, can we have the Ironworks back please? At least until someone decides what they’re going to do with the site.”
Other commenters think the prices of hotels in the Highland capital are too high.
Jim Mitchell said: “Hotels are not value for money in Inverness, far too expensive for a small town.”
Simon Ingram said: “Extortionate prices to stay in Inverness hotels and not much at all in the city for tourists to see and do.”
With other commenters suggesting Aberdeen, Elgin and Aviemore as cities with better value hotels.
However, some saw the hotels as necessary to accommodate tourists in the city.
Daniel Hall said: “Inverness needs a upgrade, we have to provide for visitors from Scotland, UK and the world.”
Tiffer Forbes said: “It is a simple supply and demand situation. If the demand for beds wasn't there, then these large companies would not be building them. Inverness is now a destination people want to visit and people, especially tourists are prepared to pay what many of us locals see as high room rates.”
Some locals even claimed that the increasing prices and tourism in the area reflected well on Inverness, with commenter Kevin Whyte saying: “Good for Inverness, clearly doing something right.”
Overall, the verdict is split over the changing city centre.
