A new children’s clothing bank has opened at HMP Inverness, for families with a loved one in custody who may be struggling with the cost of living crisis.

Staff from the prison came up with the initiative after speaking with families visiting their loved ones.

Jackie King, who is a family contact officer (FCO), works with families on a daily basis, and recognised the importance of providing some extra support to people in need.

She established the clothing bank as a way to reduce the worry and stigma often associated with having to ask for help.

Donations made by staff from all parts of the prison range from babywear to school uniform, and are available for collection in the visits waiting room.

Kerry O’Hagan, head of offender outcomes at HMP Inverness, said: “HMP Inverness is a community prison, with many of our staff coming from the surrounding areas.

“The clothing bank set up by Jackie is a prime example of how they go above and beyond to support the families of those in our care, particularly in tough times where they may need a helping hand.”
