An Inverness-shire crofter was found asleep in his vehicle by police who were tipped off by an off-duty colleague that he had been drink-driving, Inverness Sheriff Court heard.

The car was parked on a rural access road between East Croachy and Mains of Flichity at about 12.50pm on July 7 last year, said fiscal depute David Morton.

Mr Morton also told Sheriff Gary Aitken that earlier in the day the off-duty police officer who was at home in the area saw David Cameron (60) driving the car then getting out and being unsteady on his feet.

He contacted his on-duty colleagues to deal with the matter and they found Cameron asleep within the car and he later confirmed to officers that he had been driving.

Cameron, of Achvraid, admitted driving with a breath alcohol count of 44mcgs, double the legal limit of 22mcgs.

Defence solicitor John MacColl said his client used to own all the land around that area, and still owns the rough access road, but other people living in the area have right of access along it.

Given his occupation and where he lived, a driving ban would be a considerable difficulty he also pointed out.

Sheriff Aitken imposed a fine of £1040 and banned Cameron from driving for three years.
