After the cancellation chaos of this afternoon on the tracks between Aviemore and Kingussie, the operators have confirmed that the problem train, which broke down in Badenoch, has been moved.

"The train has now been moved and services are returning to normal," a spokesperson told the Strathy this evening.

"Our social media channels are the best place for updates.

"Customers should check their journey on our website, or app, before they travel."

Hundreds of passengers at both Kingussie and Aviemore were for a time left with no alternative but to make their own arrangements with, officially, "very limited transport available".

Word was that a freight train had frozen brakes and for some time there was no way round it.

It was a particularly unfortunate day for travellers as even on the road between Kingussie and Aviemore – at least on the 'old A9', where the school buses started up again after the summer holiday break – roadworks were under way at just about the tightest spot.

The notorious Alvie Bends on the narrow B9152 were particularly difficult today as the roadmen got to work.

By this evening local transport seemed to be getting itself back to something like normal after the day's disruptions.
