Popular bakery Harry Gow looks set to open a new outlet in Inverness after planning permission was granted.

The company, which operates almost 20 sites dotted from Brora in the north to Keith in the east and Aviemore in the south, has secured planning permission related to a new bakery shop in the Highland capital.

The company already operates seven bakeries in Inverness and neighbouring North Kessock, but is set to open number eight after it was granted permission for alterations and a change of use related to an existing building at 33 Harbour Road.

The unit used to house the Thrifty car hire firm.

News of the planned outlet first emerged back in March, when the application was first lodged, but its green light now means there are no more hurdles to overcome.

Granting permission under delegated powers, Highland Council planners said: "The proposed hot food takeaway is small-scale in nature, and due to the site’s location within a large general industrial and mixed-use area where there are very limited food and drink premises, is unlikely to be considered as a ‘destination’ and will instead cater for employees and visitors in the locality.

"Consequently, the proposed use does not raise any issues of general significance in terms of impact or conflict with similar uses operating in or near the city centre."

Alterations to the existing building will include installation of new timber cladding and the replacement of existing timber windows with new windows and entry door on the north-east elevation, A new concrete ramp will also be created leading into the entrance. The windows on the southwest facing elevation will be removed and filled in.

There was no immediate word on when the outlet might open, or the number of jobs it will create.

Harry Gow has been approached for comment.
