David Wotherspoon is looking forward to working again at Inverness Caley Thistle
DAVID Wotherspoon says being part of the challenge of getting Inverness Caledonian Thistle back to the Championship is what led to him coming back to the club.
The 35-year-old has returned to the Caledonian Stadium after agreeing a one-year-deal last week.
He was previously at the club for a short period during the 2023/24 campaign where he became a fans’ favourite.
After leaving Championship outfit Dunfermline Athletic at the end of last season, Wotherspoon says he was approached by head coach Scott Kellacher to come back north.
He says he is delighted to return where he says that he has been made welcome by both the club and the fans.
Wotherspoon said: “Scott says he wanted to get me back up here and working in the past with him and Billy, it is somewhere where I enjoyed playing my football. “The opportunity for helping them win promotion to the Championship appealed to me. It seemed the right move for me.
“I felt the love straight away, even before the deal was announced, there was people messaging just to ask if it was true. I have a real admiration for the fans too.”
Wotherspoon spent three months with Inverness during the 2023/24 season when he scored four goals in 10 appearances. He left in January 2024 to sign for eventual Championship winners Dundee United.
He felt it was the right decision for him to join Dundee United at the time, but was saddened by Caley Thistle’s relegation to League One and then falling into administration.
He says that he had nothing but admiration for how Inverness avoided relegation from League One following a 15-point deduction after falling into administration.
Now he wants to help lead Inverness back to better days.
“I have followed the story since I left the club. It was a hard decision to leave the club, but at the time, I felt it was the right choice. But to see them go through what they have and to stay up through adversity was brilliant. It showed the togetherness at the club and the fight and desire to keep going. Now I will look to help them push on and try and get back up to the Championship.
“It is a big club and we have real talent in this side, we will work hard during pre season and then get into the cup games and look to prove ourselves and show what we can do. It will be tough but we need to be together.”
Wotherspoon is also going through a coaching training course and will also get the opportunity to coach with the club’s youth academy during his second period in Inverness.
He said: “I did some coaching with the youngsters at Dunfermline Athletic and I want to help the youngsters come through here too and help out as much as I can.”
