Top players take honours at Highland Senior Badminton Championships

Inverness and Fortrose jointly hosted the Highland Senior Badminton Championships last weekend.

The event saw 93 players from across the country take part in two days of action.

The doubles competition was held at Inverness Royal Academy on Saturday.

Edinburgh Badminton Academy duo Britt Ashton and Liselotte van Balen were crowned women’s double winners as they upset number one seeds Badminton Scotland Orion duo Jodie Harris and Brooke Stalker 21-7, 22–24, 21–4.

Emma Donald and Rachel Maclean won the Consolation Cup defeating Carole Begg and Lynne Campbell in straight sets 21–12, 21–17.

In the men’s doubles, Senior Development Squad Wing Club duo Kenneth Cheung and Calum Flockhart, who were first seeds, claimed the title over Martyn Cook and Mark Mackay in straight sets 21–15 21–10.

Rory Cooper and James Williamson won the Consolation Cup beating Greg Broadbent and Jonathan Fyfe 21–11, 21–9.

The mixed doubles final saw Caithness duo Mark Mackay and Shona Mackay beat Calum Flockhart and Brooke Stalker 21–10, 23–21.

Tommy Ballantine and Emma Work won the Consolation Cup beating Frazer Mcculloch and Lauren Smith 21–15, 21–17.

The Singles Championships were at the Black Isle Leisure Centre at Fortrose where Mark Mackay of Caithness was crowned men’s champion beating County Badminton Club’s Jordan Edgar 21–12, 21–8.

Greg Broadbent won the Consolation Cup beating Callum Craig 21–16, 16–21, 21–15.

Emma Donald from Kinloss won the women’s title beating Shona Mackay of Caithness 19–21, 21–19, 21–14.

Orkney’s Rebecca Reid beat Kinghorn’s Rachel Macdonald 21–7, 21–15 to win the Consolation Cup.
