Nairn County triple trophy winner Martin MacDonald returns to Highland League club as first team coach under new manager Wayne Mackintosh

Wayne Mackintosh has moved to boost his backroom staff by bringing Martin MacDonald back to Nairn County as first team coach.

It marks a return to Station Park nine years after ending his time with Nairn as a player, where he made 340 appearances for the Wee County and won three trophies.

MacDonald lifted the North of Scotland Cup in 2005 and 2008, was part of the side that won the Highland League Cup in 2011 and was rewarded for his service to the team with a testimonial against Aberdeen in 2015.

Martin MacDonald and Wayne Mackintosh will once again team up for Nairn County as manager and first team coach.
Martin MacDonald and Wayne Mackintosh will once again team up for Nairn County as manager and first team coach.

He first signed for the club from Brora Rangers a decade earlier, spending 11 years with Nairn before moving on to sign with Huntly, Rothes and two spells with Clachnacuddin, where he ended his career in 2020.

MacDonald told Nairn County’s media channels: "I had never really thought about getting into coaching at all, so when Wayne got in touch it came out of the blue. I liked what he had to say though and I know him really well having played together during my entire time at Nairn as a player.

"I know Brian Macleod as well and hopefully we can all form a good team – Brian and I will be there to give Wayne all the help and support he needs behind the scenes.

"I am delighted to be back at Nairn County having spent most of my playing career with the club. I am really looking forward to making a start and getting to see everyone again.

“We have a good squad here to work with, so it is an exciting time for me and I cannot wait to get started."

Wayne Mackintosh added: "Martin was one of the first names that came into my head when I was thinking about my backroom team. He is a really enthusiastic guy and he knows the game and the Highland League really well.

“I think he will bring a lot of quality to the coaching staff and we have already discussed a number of ideas for how we want to train and play next season. He was at a lot of our home games last season as a spectator, so he knows a fair bit about the squad already.

"Having done so well throughout his career as a centre-half, Martin will be a great help to the defenders on the training pitch in improving their game and we will hopefully see the benefits of that on a Saturday.

"I am really looking forward to working with Martin and Brian and I have a great team alongside me but I am still hoping to add to my staff before we get started with pre-season training in a few weeks' time."

MacDonald’s arrival means that first team coach Alan Geegan has now also left the club.

Alan joined Nairn last summer from St Duthus to work under former boss Ross Tokely, and continued to support Brian Macleod during his time as interim manager in the second half of the campaign.

Chairman Kevin Reid said: "On behalf of everyone at the club, I would like to thank Alan for his service to Nairn County and all of the effort he put into the role, particularly during the challenging second half to the season we had where he went above and beyond to support Brian following Ross Tokely's departure.

"We wish him all the best for the future and I am sure he will be not be out of the game for long and will be a great asset to his next club."
