BILLY Mckay says league leaders Inverness Caledonian Thistle can move up several gears to improve their performances, despite going five points clear in the Championship.

The Northern Irish international scored his first league goal of the season in the 2-0 win over Greenock Morton on Saturday.

The 32-year-old striker, who returned to Inverness from Ross County in the summer, made his first start in the Championship this season, and opened the scoring before Michael Gardyne doubled their advantage in the second half.

Mckay says it was a scrappy win at the Caledonian Stadium and feels they can get better on the pitch.

But he is still content with picking up three points, regardless of performance.

“It was good to get off the mark in the league,” he said.

“Obviously I’ve had to be patient and wait for my first start. First start, first goal and three points, so it could not have gone any better.

“I still don’t think that we are at our best, but they are the games that you have to win.

“I have been in this position before, and we need to scrape wins. We did that and we got the three points.

“We have a lot more gears to move up, I still don’t think we are at our best but as long as we keep winning, it doesn’t matter how we play. But we definitely have gears we can move up.”

Inverness are five points clear of second place Raith Rovers with the two teams set to clash at Kirkcaldy in a top of the table encounter on Saturday.

Mckay says it is premature to speak about being title contenders, but is confident they can maintain their form and continue to stay in contention for promotion.

“It is too early, but we will take one game at a time as if you get ahead of yourself, you trip up.

“We’ve got a tough run with Raith away and we need to make sure we are at it.

“It’s a great start, but we are only a quarter way through the season so we need to keep up.

“If we do that for the rest of the season, we will be right up there.”

Caley Thistle recorded their sixth clean sheet in nine league games and Mckay says the defence deserves as much credit as the players that are getting the goals.

“There was some good performances, especially defensively as they had a bit to do and it goes unnoticed.

“Danny Devine made a good block on the line and that is good as a goal. People go under the radar, but we will keep plugging away. As long as we keep scoring, and the defence does their job of keeping clean sheets, we can win games.”
