The striker proved to be the difference at Gayfield with his second-half goal securing a 1-0 victory.

Along with Kilmarnock and Partick Thistle, Caley Thistle were only one of three teams to win on Saturday as they lie second in the table as they aim for promotion to the Premiership next season.

Sutherland admitted their League Cup campaign ending at the group stage was hard to take.

Victory at Arbroath and starting the league campaign with three points was vital to boost confidence in the squad.

“It was disappointing how the League Cup went, especially with the defeat to Cove Rangers and the penalties defeat to Stirling Albion.

“But we played better against Hearts as it was an improved team performance compared to Cove Rangers where it was like a basketball game from one end to the other and that is not how football should be played.

“You need to have a solid defence, but that starts up front with Manny Duku and myself working hard. We need to put a shift in and make sure the defence doesn’t have much to do.

“So getting the three points was what we came here to do and every team in the league would have been looking to do the same thing.”

Sutherland believes results on Saturday have shown it will be the most open Championship in years as they challenge for promotion.

“We want to be challenging at the top end.

“The manager brought in experienced players from the top level last year as well as the players we kept from last season. We want to win the league, but we will take each game as it comes.”
