Inverness Caledonian Thistle head coach says strength in depth at squad gave them victory over Peterhead

HEAD coach Scott Kellacher says the strength in depth in Inverness Caledonian Thistle’s squad was the reason they came away with all three points at Peterhead on Saturday.

Inverness returned to winning ways in League One with a 1-0 victory at Balmoor with Billy Mckay scoring the winner in the second half.

Kellacher was forced to make four changes to his starting line-up against Peterhead with Luis Longstaff out and Alfie Bavidge, Oscar Macintyre David Wotherspoon dropped to the bench.

In their place, Mitchell Robertson made his first league start for Inverness along with Adam Mackinnon, Chanka Zimba and Mckay all starting in their place.

They all produced a team performance that was good enough to become the first opposition to win at Peterhead in 11 months.

The win has moved them one point behind league leaders Stenhousemuir who drew 0-0 at Alloa Athletic.

Kellacher says the starting line-up required a fresh look last weekend and says he is pleased the players he chose to start did what was required of them.

He said: “We are very fortunate that we have a good squad that can do that.

“We felt there needed to be a freshness about it as one or two players were carrying knocks.

“Spoons (David Wotherspoon) was carrying a wee knock at the start of the week and we didn’t want to risk it. We didn’t want to take the chance incase he ended up doing more damage. The boys that came in did terrific along with everyone else and the boys came off the bench played a massive part. On a day like today and a place like this where Peterhead haven’t lost and to get a result, I am absolutely delighted.”

Inverness grabbed the victory in atrocious weather conditions which Kellacher described as farcical to play football in. But he was pleased that his team adapted to the elements to get the result they required and become the first opposition team to win at Peterhead since November last year.

Kellacher said: “The conditions were horrendous for both teams and it was not a spectacle where it was going to be nice and pretty.

“I thought we played the conditions well and we had to freshen it up. It doesn’t always pay off but credit to the boys that came in.

“Some were going to come in and come out. I felt we had to freshen it up today as one or two were carrying knocks and we can’t afford to have them out.

“As long as we were solid at the back, I knew we would get a chance, we were on the front foot and I felt that we deserved it.

“They hadn’t lost here in 16 games so I knew how hard it was going to be, but I didn’t expect the weather to be that bad and it was farcical at times.”
