Stay calm and wins will come says Inverness Caledonian Thistle striker George Oakley
George Oakley believes that if Inverness Caledonian Thistle can keep their composure, they will start winning games more often than not.
Results so far this season have been somewhat mixed, with two draws in the opening two weekends of the Championship season against Queen’s Park and Arbroath.
Including the Premier Sports Cup group stage, though, the Caley Jags are unbeaten in six to kick off the 2022/23 campaign.
However, Oakley and his team-mates are keenly aware that their win column in the league remains blank, and he is confident that if Inverness can do what they are good at, they will win games more often than not.
“It’s the start of the year, and it’s always a little bit frantic at this time – everyone’s buzzing to have football back, and it can be a bit back and forth on the pitch,” Oakley said.
“Once we all settle down and get back to what we do best – keeping the ball – we’ll get back to scoring goals.
“The biggest thing is to not panic, keep doing what we’re doing and it will all click into place.
“Once it clicks, you feel unstoppable.
“That’s what we’re waiting for. We’re unbeaten, so it has been a good start to the year – we can’t ask for much more than that.
“The only thing is that we want to be winning the games that we’re drawing. It will come, I believe that and we all believe that, so it’s just about staying composed and focused.
“I have no doubt that we will get back to winning games instead of drawing.”
The next chance ICT have to put a win on the board is this Saturday as Cove Rangers return to the Caledonian Stadium.
Cove were Caley Thistle’s final Premier Sports Cup group opponents, with that match finishing 1–1.
Inverness did go on and win the penalty shoot-out, but that will not be a back-up for them this weekend, so Oakley says they need to be more clinical to claim the points inside 90 minutes.
“In that game, I feel like we did dominate the game but we didn’t take our chances,” he reflected.
“That’s the thing in past games, we need to start creating more and having the desire to go and score the goals to kill off teams.
“That’s what we’ve got to do, and that’s what we’ve learned – teams will get a chance against us, and if they take it then we’ve got to go and get another goal.
“We’ve all got to take our chances on the pitch earlier and kill games off.
“That’s the biggest thing we’ve taken, we have to stay composed and know we’re good enough to go and win these games comfortably.”
