Full back Cameron Harper, midfielder Roddy MacGregor and striker Daniel MacKay all started in the 1—0 defeat to Hearts on Tuesday night.

Midfielder Lewis Hyde also came on as a substitute in the second half where they went up against an experienced Hearts team that featured Scottish internationalists Craig Gordon and Steven Naismith.

Welsh, who made his debut as captain at Tynecastle, is looking forward to helping the progression of young players in the team.

But he says they have to take the opportunity of establishing themselves in the first team when they receive the chance.

“The young boys did great, and it shows the strength of the squad this year,” said Welsh after the Hearts game.

“Sometimes you have to throw them in – sink or swim.

“But all of them are more of them are good enough to step up to the challenge.”

Tuesday’s night game was decided by a controversial penalty when Harper was deemed by referee Steven Maclean to be guilty of handball.

Manager John Robertson was infuriated with the decision, claiming the referee was guilty of guessing the handball rule.

Despite also being disappointed with the defeat, Welsh was pleased with the chances they created at Tynecastle.

He said that the performance proved they could match the league favourites and is looking forward to the Championship campaign starting later next weekend.

“Everyone saw that we are more than a match for them and that was us with just half a squad,” said Welsh.

“We have seven or eight boys still to come back and it will be a different game when we play in the league.

“But we showed we can put the effort in on the pitch.
