LOVAT lost 3-0 to Kinlochshiel at Balgate as four shinty sides kick-started their plans for the new season, which begins next month.

Shiel had initially arranged a match against Inverness, however the city club could not secure the use of the Bught Park, so Shiel then set up a fixture against Kilmallie, however the short notice meant the Premier Division new boys couldn't raise a team.

Lovat stepped in at the last moment and found Shiel in fine form, the Wester Ross outfit taking control in the latter stages with two late goals by John MacRae and Keith MacRae adding to Finlay MacRae's 70th minute opener.

Shiel's pre-season preparations continue this Saturday with trip to An Aird for an encounter with Camanachd Cup winners Fort William.

On Saturday, February 12, Shiel will face Ross-shire rivals Caberfeidh at Castle Leod with a clash with Ballachulish at Jubilee Park on Saturday, February 26 completing their pre season programme.

Lochaber reserves, who step up to North Division Two this year after winning the North Division Three championship in dramatic fashion last term, met up with South Division One Ballachulish - with the Argyll men winning 3-0.

Kingussie have outlined their pre-season fixture schedule which begins on February 12 when they take on Skye for the Thomas Ferguson Memorial Cup.

On the following Saturday, Kings welcome Caberfeidh to The Dell with a mix of Kingussie first and second team players hosting Marine Harvest South Division One side Taynuilt on February 26.

After we'd gone to press yesterday (Wednesday), Lewis Camanachd were hoping that the Camanachd Association board would allow the Western Isles club to compete in North Division Three for the very first time.

If the Lewis application is to be ratified, the number of clubs participating in North Division Three will increase to 10.

If accepted in to the league, their debut will take place against Beauly reserves at Braeview Park on Saturday, March 5, the opening day of the new season.
