As far as Blair Spittal is concerned, Saturday’s 1–0 defeat away at Dundee United was a snaphsot of Ross County’s season so far.

The statistics show that the Staggies created a number of chances, more than their opponents, but they came away not only without a win but without any rewards for their efforts.

Some performances have been very encouraging from County, but Spittal is realistic that the optimism around Dingwall can only continue for so long when victories are not forthcoming.

“It sums up our season to be honest,” the midfielder, playing centrally behind Alex Samuel on Saturday, admitted.

“We actually started the game pretty well, but then we give away a poor goal.

“Then we created chances, and we probably should be taking at least one of them.

“Especially in the second half, I thought we pinned Dundee United back and they never really had any chances, but they’ve ended up defending well and we didn’t capitalise on it.

“It’s easy to say that the performances have been good, but you do eventually need to turn them into positive results. It’s the same old, which is pretty frustrating to be honest.”

Adding to County’s frustration was that United’s goal was largely of the Staggies’ own doing.

Jack Baldwin gave the ball away with a poor header to set United off on their way forward.

They had worked it well to get to goalscorer Ilmari Niskanen, but Ashley Maynard-Brewer will feel as though he should have saved the shot.

“That makes it even more frustrating,” Spittal reasoned.

“We’re not getting those sort of goals for us, it’s always against us.

“It’s easily avoidable, but we’ve been saying that for the last couple of weeks.

“The performance levels are there, we just need to keep pushing and hopefully the rub of the green will turn our way.”
