Manager John Robertson believes Inverness Caledonian Thistle will be driven by the semi final heartbreak of last season as they start their quest to win the Scottish Cup at Alloa Athletic tomorrow.

His side went on an astonishing run to the last four of the competition before losing 3-0 to Hearts at Hampden Park in April.

Robertson says he will refuse to accept his team are in the tournament just to make up the numbers, insisting their goal is to lift the trophy in May.

“It was hugely disappointing to lose in the semi final. I wanted us to go all the way and win it,“ he said.

“It is not about going on a run in the cup, it is about going to win it.

“That is no disrespect to Alloa. I want the players to go down there and take it one round at a time.

“We’re not here for a good time, we want to win in each round.

“It is knockout football and Alloa feel the same.

“It is an opportunity to play high-profile games and we have a tough match against a fellow Championship side.”

Midfielder Tom Walsh could be set to make his return to the first-team squad after being out of action since November with a hamstring injury.

Fellow midfielder Sean Welsh is also close to returning to full fitness after breaking his foot against Ayr United back in October but will be unavailable tomorrow.

Robertson says he is getting close to his team being back to full strength.

“We are getting key players back to the squad at a good time.

“We have managed without five big players for a long time this season.

“That is down to the quality of the squad and the young lads.”
