John Robertson has revealed that on-loan winger Kai Kennedy could be set to stay at the Caledonian Stadium until the end of the season – if he signs a new deal with parent club Rangers.
The 18-year-old has caught the imagination of fans since making a temporary move to the Highland capital in October, with many keeping their fingers crossed his loan will be extended past January.
Any decision on Kennedy’s future will likely be taken out of Caley Thistle’s hands though, with Robertson keen to keep hold of the youngster.
He is out of contract at Ibrox in the summer, so while there is optimism that he will stay in the Highlands, it depends on his longer term future in Glasgow.
“We’ve spoken to Rangers and they have given us the scenario they see going forward,” Robertson said.
“The key thing that has to be discussed is between Rangers and the player. Until that is sorted, we have to wait and see as he is a Rangers player.
“If he signs a new deal, they are quite happy for him to remain here this season.
“That hasn’t been done yet, so we will just crack on with what we have got for the moment before contacting them again.”
An impressive performance against Queen of the South a few weeks ago on TV saw Kennedy’s name trending on social media, a mark of the impact he has made.
His key role in the side almost makes it easy to forget he is still a teenager, and Robertson thinks teams now highlight him as a danger.
“He has done very well but people forget he is only 18,” Robertson said.
“He made an immediate impact with us and did very well.
“In the last couple of games he has been quiet. I think teams have doubled up on him and some teams have used very heavy tactics on him, to say the least.
“We know what he is capable of.
“Now it is up to Kai to keep his performances up to a high standard.”
