INVERNESS co-driver Paul Beaton is on the verge of making British rallying history after triumphing in a top UK championship with driver Euan Thorburn.
A fifth victory from five in the BTRDA Rally Series in Wales last weekend was enough to clinch the overall title with two events to spare.
That, in itself, was a feat never achieved before, with Beaton and Thorburn roaring home more than a minute ahead of closest challenger Stephen Petch.
But the pair, unstoppable in their restored 2005 Ford Focus WRC can now complete an unprecedented double.
No driver has ever won the BTRDA title and Scottish Championships in the same season.
But Beaton and Thorburn will secure the latter crown if they finish in the top five at the Grampian Rally on August 10.
