DAVID Proctor knows only too well the significance of the forthcoming season.

The defender missed the final three months of the previous campaign with a troublesome hamstring injury, making only 13 appearances in total.

Proctor concedes it was hard to watch his team-mates train and play games as he suffered on the sidelines, but the experience has, he insists, made him a stronger individual.

With a year remaining on his contract, Proctor knows the importance of proving his fitness, not so much to Caley Thistle manager Terry Butcher, but to himself.

“It was a very frustrating season for me last time out, but I’ve got to try and channel that positively,” said the former Hibernian and Dundee United player.

“It’s a massive season for myself because I want to make up for what happened last season.

“I think it’s just about proving a point to myself more than anything that physically I can keep up with the rest of the boys.

“When you are out for a while with an injury all you can do is just stay strong and have faith in your ability that when you’re fit, you can get back involved again.

“It is difficult at times when you are coming in every day and seeing the rest of the boys going out to the training field and you’re stuck in the physio room.

“However, that’s motivation enough for me to make sure I give myself every chance to keep 100 per cent fit.”

Proctor is certainly doing just that after coming through all three of Caley Thistle’s pre-season friendlies against Clach, Forres Mechanics and Elgin City last week without an adverse reaction to the injury that blighted last season.

“I’ve felt good so far and to have played all three games is a massive thing for me psychologically to get that under my belt,” said the 27-year-old.

“It proves that I can do it and hopefully I’ll just keep getting fitter and fitter.

“I missed a lot of football last season with my hamstring, so I just want to get as good a pre-season under my belt as I can and just make sure I’m 100 per cent ready for when the manager calls on me.”
