RUGBY embraced the Christmas spirit as Canal Park played host to the Highland Festive Sevens.

The annual event saw 30 players take part in the annual tournament which is held during the Christmas period.

The friendly competition saw men and women form four teams for a fun afternoon of rugby at the artificial pitch.

Maclennan’s Maurauders came out on top to lift the annual Festive Sevens shield.

Club vice-president Roy Dinnes says it is an annual tradition which the club is always keen to keep alive.

“It is a tournament where we look for mums and dads as well as daughters and sons to play,” he said.

“The youngest player was 14 and the oldest player was 40.

“We had 30 people playing with another 20 people watching on.

“There was seven games played during the competition and it was an exciting afternoon.

“It is a great tournament and it allows the club to end the year on a social footing.

“The club aims to promote itself as a family and community club and sevens rugby creates a good environment to do that.”

Meanwhile Highland Rugby Club are on a winter break and will resume their National One campaign when they take on Heriot’s Blues in Edinburgh on Saturday, January 11.

Highland are in third place in National One and will look to leapfrog Heriot’s into second who are three points ahead.

Highland 2nd XV will face North Police at Canal Park on the same day in Caledonia North Two.
